Boys Win Independence Invitational

A new invite by a new school brings a small field to Independence high school. Being on the same day as the McFarland, is unfortunate and diluted both local events especially on a weekend when many teams look to travel out of town as well.

Despite all of the above, it looks like both the boys and girls races were good close races for the most part. In the boys race, Sandles won in a time 17:03 on the 5k course. He was followed by one athlete from each of the other competing schools.

In the end, North won the invite and was lead by Lopez who came in 3rd in a time of 17:52. The host took second by a point over Foothill. The results would have been different if Foothill's number one runner Jose Lopez had run the race.

The girls race was won by Natalie Fernandez (21:20) who lead her Trojans to the team win and has been improving with each meet this season. At the EB invite, the North's two girls beat her.

Stars defeat the Vikings

Today's meet for North was a tail of two meets. They were up against one of the best teams in town and annual bottom dweller West. On the boys side, Ridgeview did the expected and took the first six places but Lopez (17:47) was able to come in 7th and keep the Stars from being skunked (A score of 15 to 50, means the winning school got all 7 of the runners in before the other school's first runner)

On the girls side, the Stars performed well. North was able to break up Ridgeview's scoring five by taking 4th,5th and 6th. E. Perez, N, 21:12; Moyer, N, 21:17; Y. Perez, N, 21:27 form a tight group and when their 4th and 5th runners get better, they will be a tough team in the SWYL.

Against both West squads, the Stars skunked them.

Another Solo Star?

Over the years, North is known for having an outstanding front runners. Long ago, there was Linda Goen (late 70s) whose 800 times are still in the all time top ten.

In recent years, there was Candace Carlson (09) who won several SWYL titles and made state a couple times but did not run her senior year. Instead last year, Cecilia Lopez picked up the torch and qualified for state herself. On her heels last year was freshman Kaylee Moyer (photo) who improved throughout the season and had a good track season as well.

Both Lopez and Carlson will be competing for CSUB this fall.
